About Home and Garden Barrels

About the workshop

Built in Kentucky. Crafted from bourbon oak.

Hand-built bourbon oak furniture from our family shop in Kentucky.

How it started

This story began with a race that had no podium. Mike, an endurance athlete and nurse, looked at a retired bourbon barrel and saw a stage worth standing on. He cut, sanded, and fitted that first piece between hospital shifts. When the world slowed down, the workshop didn’t. One project turned into many. Neighbors talked. Orders followed.

A single-car garage gave way to a pole-barn shop on the family property, but the approach stayed the same. We reclaim authentic Kentucky bourbon barrels, keep the character that years of aging left in the oak, and shape each stave into furniture meant for daily use. The material sets the rules—we listen to the grain, preserve the char where it belongs, and finish every surface to work hard and look better with time.

The first build: a barrel podium for a Kentucky race.

Meet the maker

Mike still runs every board through his hands. Morning starts with selecting staves, trimming hoops, and sketching layouts on the bench. Nursing taught him to plan ahead, double-check measurements, and solve problems quietly.

Afternoons are for glue-ups and hardware, evenings for answering customer questions and loading deliveries with the family. Finishing days mean respirators on, oil in hand, and every edge burnished until it feels like silk.

Inside the shop

Step inside the shop and you’ll see fixtures built for efficiency: finishing racks lined with drying tops, stacks of reclaimed staves sorted by curve, and bins of salvaged hoops waiting for a second life.

The workflow is dialed for small-batch production—dust collection humming, jigs labeled, and clamps hanging in reach—so custom orders and repeat runs move at the same pace without losing the human touch.

What we build

We focus on the builds customers reach for most. Tables anchor a room, cabinets store collections, planters warm porches, and shelves bring barrel history to the wall.

  • Tables: Coffee, dining, and bistro heights cut from matched barrel tops.
  • Cabinets: Lockable storage with lighting, soft-close doors, and custom interiors.
  • Planters: Weather-ready liners, drainage, and char that keeps soil healthy.
  • Shelves: Slim stave shelves, hooks, and wall grids that fit tight spots.
